Alligator River

Way down upon the Swanee River,⠀ Far, far away,⠀ That’s where my heart is yearning ever,⠀ Home where the old folks stay.⠀ Florida in December. Hot, humid, and incredibly lush. Inland, at the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Centre State Park, the ocean left behind. Named after the man who wrote 'Oh, Susanna, Old Folks at Home, Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair'... Songs not too many remember these days. There, a solitary trail winds through palmettos, oaks, and shrubs and along the Suwannee River. The river: brown, slow moving, swampy. The air, damp. Alligator warnings all over the place so even the smallest rustle can make you nervous.
