Blue Chisel Studio

Small editions. Carved and pulled by hand. Never reprinted.

How the prints are made
  1. A sketch in India ink, drawn with a fountain pen
Each print begins as a sketch in India ink, with my father's fountain pen — the fragment of an idea that will grow layer by layer.
  2. A reduction print being carved from a single block of linoleum
A reduction print is carved in stages, from a single block of linoleum.
  3. Ink being mixed and rolled onto the linoleum block by hand
Ink is mixed and rolled on by hand, the block holding every colour to come.
  4. A colour layer being pulled through the press by hand
Each colour layer is manually pulled through the press.
  5. A reduction print growing in detail with successive colour layers
The image grows in detail and complexity with each new colour layer.
  6. The finished reduction print — Colours of New England by Kate Goetz
The finished piece — Colours of New England. Every impression in the edition lives or dies with the block that made it. View the piece →
